Ion Dorobantu

Ion Dorobantu is a Romanian guitarist from Timișoara. Although he was trained in formal classical guitar and currently teach classical guitar at West University of Timișoara (since 1998), his area of proficiency extend over other genre like blues, pop-rock, and specially jazz, mainly on electric guitar.

He is a graduate of “George Enescu” National University of Arts from Iași, on classical guitar (1997), and got his Ph. D. degree at “Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy from Cluj-Napoca (2014) with the thesis Guitar in Jazz - Expressiveness and Versatility.


Ion Dorobantu is an active musician since 1995, playing classical solo or cameral repertoire, and standard jazz sets with his trio. He also started working with theatres in musicals - such as Full Monty, Cabaret or Maria de Buenos Aires, and production shows on cruise ships. He begin to compose and arrange for jazz formulas and recorded a CD with Astor Piazzolla’s quintets (Nuevo Tango Quintet plays Astor Piazzolla – ANIVERTANGO, vol.1, 2012)

He is frequently invited in juries of national or international classical guitar contests, also in jazz festivals or venues. 

He is the founder and the artistic director of the TIMISOARA INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL since 2015.
