Stefan Trifan was born in Roman, Romania in 1977. He started playing guitar when he was 15 years old, and took lessons with Ionel Tiganus in Piatra Neamt.

He attended guitar class at the Academy of Music Gheorghe Dima in Cluj-Napoca, where he studied with Professor Constantin Andrei. He started teaching in 2000 at Sergiu Celibidache Music School in Roman. Since 2003, he has been teaching classical guitar at Sigismund Toduta Music Highschool from Cluj-Napoca, as well as at the guitar department at the Faculty of Music from Piatra Neamt. In 2012 he has obtained the Philosophy Doctor of Musical Arts title with Summa Cum Laude at the Academy of Music Gheorghe Dima, under the guiding of Professor Dr Pavel Puscas.

In addition, he is an Associate Professor of Classical guitar and Chamber music at the same academy. Stefan Trifan is one of the most prolific guitar teachers from Romania. In less than 10 years, his students received over 250 awards, more than 80 of them being first prizes at national and international guitar competitions.

He has won many prestigious awards, and has been jury member and master classes' lecturer at many national and international guitar festivals. In 2006 he founded Transilvania Guitar Association in Cluj-Napoca, and since 2004 he is the executive of Transilvania International Guitar Festival.
