Edin Karamazov & No Borders Orchestra
Sunday, March 17th | 20:00
Kolarac Foundation Hall
When Karamazov plays there’s magic in the air. It’s not just playing outside the historic context, but putting an expressive spin on music (…) and then it turns into a generation of art that creates other than recreates. Not everybody can do that.
Leo Brouwer, Havana 2011
Over the past decade Edin Karamazov has established himself as one of today’s most exciting and charismatic lute players, garnering rave reviews and critical acclaim across Europe and America for his dazzlingly virtuosic and emotionally committed performances of an adventurous repertoire that ranges from the 16th century to the music of Balkan Gypsies.
He made his solo debut as a lutenist in 1998. Significantly, it was as a last-minute substitute for the legendary Julian Bream.
Since then Edin Karamazov has performed and recorded over 80 CDs with many major international early-music ensembles and artists. A consummate interpreter and technician on a wide variety of plucked instruments from disparate cultures and epochs, he is also an outstanding recitalist and has appeared at Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus, Sydney Opera, Royal Albert Hall in London, Salle Pleyel in Parizu, National Centre for The Performing Arts in Beijing, Orchard Hall in Tokio, as well as at the most important music festivals.
He still enjoys giving impromptu performances on the street. Exclusive on Decca records, his solo-discography includes award winning albums such as Come, Heavy Sleep („Karamazov plays like God“ – Le Monde, 2004) and The Lute is a Song („Karamazov is a dazzler“ – Los Angeles Times, 2009), with guest musicians such as Renée Fleming, Andreas Scholl, Sting and Kaliopi.
Edin has received numerous awards, among which Edison Preis Amsterdam 2001, a Grammy nomination in 2002, Grand Prix du Disque in 2004, Brit Classical Award nomination in 2006, Premio Goffredo Petrassi the best instrumentalist in Italy in 2007 and Premio Cubadisco in 2009. This season Karamazov performs in Australia, Europe and South America.
