Georg Schmitz studied at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory and at the University in Mainz. He took master classes with Konrad Ragossnig, David Russell, Hubert Käppel, and participated in the summer academies at IRCAM in Paris, as well as making study-visits to Poland and Hungary.

He has worked for many years as an arranger, choral and orchestral conductor. His compositions include: Operation Hochhalten, commissioned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for the opening of the Cultural Summer, Robot, commissioned by the German-Polish Society, Fantasie for solo guitar (Edition Margaux), Letzte Zugaben (Chanterelle), Toccata & Elegie (Chanterelle).

Georg Schmitz is the Founder and Director of Koblenz International Guitar Festival & Academy, and teaches guitar, music theory and aural training at Music School in Koblenz.
